The Preston Mosque was a design competition which provided a unique opportunity for Umaa to design a building which will become a part of Preston’s skyscape in the future. The client was looking for a timeless landmark building near Preston city centre and visible from the surrounding area.
The site was located in Preston, just off the M55 highway. Due to the location, the design had to be strong and bold in order to attract users. Client also desired some usage of traditional Islamic elements within the design and an external courtyard.
Thus, the design was shaped by several factors: functional, modern with traditional Islamic motifs imbedded into the design and a visually pleasing addition to the streetscape. This was done creating a monolithic design, encapsulating the programmes within the building and bringing in traditional Islamic tessellations in to the façade, that will be captured within the praying spaces in the mosque.
