The African Village

Umaa Architecture was appointed to carry out RIBA stages 1-4 design services for the comprehensive redevelopment of the ‘African Village’ site in Perry Barr. Beginning with initial design concepts the practice carried out pre-planning consultation and produced full planning details for submission of a major application.

The project site is a large corner plot in the centre of Perry Barr, currently occupied by the ‘African Village’ restaurant and bar. The site is within two minutes’ walk of the station and local bus interchange, making it an ideal location for mixed-use residential and commercial development. The site is in aprominent and highly visible location, on a main vehicle route to and from the City Centre and facing the former BCU campus site (which is soon to be regenerated into accommodation for the Commonwealth Games).

This site offered a perfect opportunity to expand upon the council’s vision for the regeneration of Perry Barr. The proposal is for a high-rise mixed use building with a strong curved façade addressing the corner aspect of the site and creating a symbolic gateway to the regenerated Perry Barr area. The ground floor is occupied by five new commercial units, extending the existing shopping area and perfect for local shops and services, while the upper floors provide luxury 1- and 2- bedroom apartments in a range of different layout types.
